SPC700 sound format

SPC700 sound file (or SPC) file is a sound data file, akin to a MIDI file and the PSF file format from the Playstation, copied from a Super Famicom or Super NES (SNES for short) game, especially through the ZSNES emulator. The format name .SPC comes from the name of the sound chip used in the Super Famicom and the SNES, i.e. Sony SPC700. With Winamp's Alpha II SPC player plugin, the SPCs can be played at sample rates higher than 44.1 kHz. That is not possible on the original Super Famicom or SNES console. The SNES console has a sample rate of 32 kHz, compared to the CD audio sample rate which is 44.1 kHz. The Sound Blaster Audigy 2 has a maximum sample rate of 96 kHz. Winamp allows the user to sample SPC files at the computer's sound card's maximum sample rate, possibly making SPC files played in this manner sound more realistic than on the Super Famicom or SNES console.
